THE PROBLEM:
Custodians are an often invisible group within the school community, and responsibility for their well-being is pushed between multiple parties. The long hours and physically taxing nature of their work necessitate proper rest, so a comfortable space with proper privacy and amenities is crucial. These are often missing.
WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE:
Broadly, Project Biscuit takes a custodian-centred approach: we work towards improving all-round conditions for custodians in school, based on their needs.
Material conditions:
- the cleanliness, ventilation, comfort and adequacy of custodians’ resting spaces
- the provision of snacks to custodians
- access to other amenities and facilities
Creation of a positive socio-cultural environment in school, including:
- robust communication channels with various stakeholders (school administration, Estate dept) through which the voices and concerns of custodians are listened to
- showing our appreciation towards custodians
- a friendly school community that actively engages with school custodians
